My focus is on helping “aging families” and those who assist them to communicate in ways that reduce stress around decision-making so that elders’ final years can be lived as safely and fully as possible and in satisfactory ongoing relationships with family members and others. My services include mediating conflicts involving elders, their families, facility staff, professionals and other service providers. I also believe strongly in conflict prevention and provide services that include: facilitation of family planning meetings to prevent, as much as possible, conflicts and crises that can arise as a parent or spouse ages; facilitating ongoing, problem-solving resident/family councils at residential facilities; and training family members, staff and other professionals serving elders in basic mediation principles that can be helpful in daily interactions.

Approach to Practice / Form of Mediation
My mediation style is facilitative; my goal is to help all participants feel comfortable enough with the process to speak freely about their needs, concerns, and values related to the conflict or potential conflict. Honest conversation in a safe setting can result in effective, sustainable agreements. Elders are involved in mediations to the full extent possible, which can mean participating on their own or with assistance from a friend, family member or attorney, or having a legal representative participate in their place.

Background
I have been a member of the Steering Committee of the Elder Mediation Interest Group of the Oregon Mediation Association since 2005. I served as a member of the Board of the Senior Provider Information Network (SPIN) (2006-2007) and as a volunteer with the Portland Small Claims Court mediation program (2006-2007). I was a volunteer with the city’s Portland Neighborhood Mediation Center (2000) and was the member of the city's Advisory Committee for the Center (2001). I volunteered for the District of Columbia Mediation Service (1992-1996) and the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (1993-1997). I served as an Equal Employment Opportunity counselor (1994-1998) while working as an administrator at the National Academy of Sciences. I am a member of OMA and an associate member of the Oregon Bar Association sections on Alternative Dispute Resolution, Elder Law, and Estate Planning.

Education/Training
I completed the Adult Guardianship/Family Caregiver Mediation training provided in June 2003 by The Center for Social Gerontology and Peace Talks, as well as the October 2003 Oregon Law Institute seminar on Guardianships & Conservatorships. I also attended the Oregon State Bar CLE on Elder Law Essentials. I've completed more that 200 hours of mediation training and have been certified and served as a volunteer for four public mediation programs, in Portland (neighborhood and small claims cases) and Washington, DC (a court-sponsored program and a civil rights unit). I attend Oregon Mediation Association conferences and numerous other continuing education events. I hold a B.A. from the University of California at Riverside.
