WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY MEDIATION INTEREST GROUP?

So, you've completed basic mediation training and you're raring to go. Your local community mediation center most likely has mediation work for you, along with an assortment of newsletters, training sessions and social gatherings for volunteer mediators.
Are you wondering about the big picture, and how you can be involved at a statewide level? CMIG may be just what you want.

CMIG stands for Community Mediation Interest Group. It is a collaborative effort of the Alliance for Community Mediation and the Oregon Mediation Association (OMA) to provide support to volunteer mediators in Oregon. Technically an OMA subcommittee, CMIG is open to community mediators from across Oregon, regardless of OMA membership status.

CMIG BENEFITS
There are numerous benefits to belonging. Some of them are:

Reduced OMA membership rate. Volunteer mediators can join OMA for a low $35, instead of the regular $85 fee.

Reduced Registration Rates for OMA Members.
All OMA members enjoy reduced registration rates for OMA's Annual Conference and other OMA sponsored training events. Some events have additional discounts for Volunteer Mediators.

OMA-CMIG listserv.
The CMIG Listserv is excellent for posting questions, ideas and thoughts about which individuals want to get opinions. It is used by members of CMIG to further their skills and knowledge of mediation and to share experiences. The technology works by members of the Listserv mailing posts to a hosting computer which automatically mails the post out to all members of the Listserv. If others would like to respond to the post, they can simply click "reply" on their E-mail software and their response will be automatically submitted to the computer for distribution.

The Volunteer View
.
The Volunteer View column in OMA's Newsletter focuses on issues of interest to Volunteer Mediators, and is mailed quarterly to all OMA members.

Regional Training Opportunities.
Sharpen your skills and meet other Volunteer Mediators without traveling very far or spending very much. CMIG, with the help of ODRC and OMA, has already provided free trainings in Salem, Grants Pass, and Klamath Falls in 2000. More are on the way.

HOW DO I JOIN CMIG?
Joining CMIG is easy! And best of all, you are making no particular commitment. Joining means nothing more than receiving information and taking part in whatever opportunities you like. This organization is about supporting you, not asking more from you.

And, thanks to OMA sponsorship, it is free!

Of course, if you have a particular skill you would like to contribute to CMIG (such as writing articles, conducting training, or developing electronic media) , CMIG would be all the richer.
