Mission: helping elders to age peacefully through planning, family meetings, conflict management and elder mediation.

Elder Mediation (EM) helps all participants work together to resolve a conflict which involves at least one elder (50+), directly or indirectly. EM includes family members and/or others with an ongoing role in the elder’s life. The elder participates to the fullest degree possible in order to reinforce his/her autonomy, provide a voice in important decisions being made and validate his/her human dignity. The individual who first contacts me may be, but often is not, the elder involved.

Other characteristics:
* voluntary
* all participants are equally my clients
* participants talk & work together to make decisions
* any agreement reached must be acceptable to all participants
* confidential
* private, safe setting
* I do not take sides, judge right/wrong, give advice
* fees are generally shared equally among participants

Who else benefits? Those who work with elders:
* facilities
* professionals
* other service providers

EM provides a holistic approach:
* housing/living arrangements
* caregiving
* healthcare planning
* financial management
* trust & estate planning & probate matters
* medical treatment & placement
* guardianship/conservatorship
* consumer issues
* social life & activities
* spirituality, aging & end-of-life issues
* ongoing relationships

Approach to Practice / Form of Mediation

Facilitative, interest-based mediation in joint, face-to-face sessions, with caucusing as appropriate. Conference call and online mediation are available when participants live in another city or state making travel time and expenses difficult for face-to-face mediation.

Background

Through my professional training, volunteer roles, life and work experiences, I bring sensitivity and understanding of the aging process to conflicts involving elders, their families and others. I have practiced Elder Mediation since 1997 and mediated small claims and landlord-tenant cases for Multnomah County District Court since 1999. Previous work experience includes: manager of Ombudsman for Victims of Elder Abuse program, Elders in Action, 1998-2000; subsidized housing ombudsman, elder sensitivity facilitator and member, Portland-Multnomah Commission on Aging, 1995-97; many years honing my negotiating and problem solving skills in customer service, local telecommunications company. Professional member of Oregon Mediation Association since 1996, Oregon Gerontological Association since 1995; associate member of the Oregon State Bar Elder Law Section since 2003 and Estate Planning and Administration Section since 2004. I authored “Elder mediation is useful in many situations”, published in the Spring 2004 Elder Law Section Newsletter.
